The Gatehouse dates back to the 17th century and is nearly the oldest part of the building. The oldest being the underground vaults from the main building. In the living room of the gatehouse the walls are covered with old paintings that were found in the castle. The kitchen gatehouse has a private terrace at the inner court of the castle. Because of the sheltered aspect of the inner court guests can use the terrace all year round.
The windows in the kitchen and the living room overlook the moat. On a sunny day you can see the carps swimming. We have some 250 of them. But during the days of land consolidation, the water level went down so far that there were no more than 20 carps swimming. One of the monks who lived there at the time, was an enthusiastic amateur fisherman. The story goes that because he had caught all the carps on his fishing line several times, he knew them all by name. He suggested to father superior to install a water pump in order to supply the moat frequently with water. Thus his swimming friends survived.
Back in the days of the land consolidation, the low water level also caused subsidence of the castle. In a large-scale renovation project in 2005 and 2006 various foundations of the castle have been replaced. It turned out that the building was resting on foundation of piles and marlstone.
