The secular side of a monastery
Voorbouw begane grond (Front Extension on the ground floor) used to be the secular wing of the monastery. Outsiders were not allowed to enter into the closed community. They were invited in the Front Extension. Here the parlours were situated where the monks met with their families. Many a tear was shed there by mothers and fathers visiting their child that had entered the monastery. Emotions expressing both pride as well as melancholy and nostalgia.
